우리에겐 흔히 '스타쉽'이라는 이름으로 알려져 있는 80년대의 인기 팝락정도로 알고 있는 밴드. 하지만, 이들은 엄연히 락의 역사에 한 획을 그었던 사이키델릭 락커들이었던 Jefferson Airplane 이 그전신이다.
그 전설적인 히피무브먼트의 상징같은 노래였던 somebody to love와 white rabbit 의 밴드가 We built the city같은 전형적인 소모용 팝히트넘버의 스타쉽의 전신이라는 것이 잘 연결되지 않을 정도로, 80년대는 모든 뮤지션을 '상업의 물결'로 내몰았던 시기이기도 했다.

물론 이들만이 아니었다. U2와 큐어등 고집센 몇몇과 헤비메틀의 몇몇 정통밴드들을 제외하면 60-70년대의 락커들은 거의 변절에 가까운 수준의 변신을 해댔던 것이 80년대였으니까 (수많은 예중 대표적인 밴드중 하나로 '제네시스'와 '필 콜린즈'를 떠올리면 되리라. 아니 '파트 타임 러버'를 불러대던 스티비 원더도 벗어나기 어렵던 시절).
나쁘고 좋고를 떠나 그런 시대가 레이건시대였다. 그리고, 그 시대에 음악을 처음 듣던 애송이들은 이런 위대한 밴드들이 원래 이런 팝송을 연주하는 분들인줄 알았었고... (그런데 문득 80년대 영미음악권과 2000년대이후 세계음악계가 겹치는 건 왜일까). 그리고 그런 80년대의 팝넘버들은 또한 우리를 즐겁게 해주는 또다른 의미의 좋은 곡들로 남았다. 결과적으로.
아무튼, 이 락의 역사에 남은 명밴드인 제퍼슨 에어플레인은 상업적으로는 가장 성공했던 (빌보드 핫 싱글 1위곡만 85-86년 2년사이에 세곡을 남긴) 스타쉽과의 중간다리라 할수 있는 '제퍼슨 스타쉽'이라는 밴드명으로 75년에서 80년대초중반까지 활동한다. 그 시기에 이들은 음악적으로는 아직 진중했지만, 사이키델릭 밴드라는 타이틀은 거의 떼버린 상태라 할수 있는 과도기상태라 할수 있었다. 그 와중에 나온 걸작 싱글이 바로 Nuclear Furniture 앨범의 수록곡 No way out.
이곡은 아무리 들어도 질리지 않는 명곡인데, 당시에는 싱글 23위가 최고순위였다. 곡의 분위기는 어느 시대인지 모를만큼 독특한데, 기타리프-솔로부터 보컬톤-곡의 구성등 흠잡기가 어려운 작품이다. 마지막으로, 세 시기의 명곡 한곡씩만을 뽑으라면 White Rabbit (제퍼슨 에어플레인시절), No way out (제퍼슨 스타쉽시절), 그리고 유명한 Sara (스타쉽시절).
