90년대 중반 얼터너티브시대의 大격전지에서 자신들만의 아주 독특한 색깔의 퍼즐 한조각을 채운 케이크 (Cake). 그 혁명같던 락의 시대에 '없었다면 90년대 음악이 바뀔만큼 좌지우지하던' 밴드는 아니었지만, 없으면 '매우' 섭섭했을 퍼즐이라는 표현이 적절할 듯 하다.

케이크스러운 음악은 케이크밖에 없다라고 할정도의 독특한 음악을 구사했는데, 여기에는 재즈와 아이리쉬 포크, 컨트리, 훵크, 힙합까지 짬뽕이 되어 있다- 흔히 이런 음악을 할때의 관건은 결국 '얼마나 자연스럽게 버무려내느냐'에 달려있는데, 데뷔부터 능글맞게 이걸 해낸 그들은 역시 대가다.
'이태리제 가죽소파'라는 제목의 이 곡은 중간의 브라스부분이 특히 매력만점인데, 케이크가 국제적인 성공을 거두게 되는 결정적인 작품 'The Distance'가 수록된 2집 "Fasion Nugget"에 수록된 곡이다. 이런 곡만 들어봐도 케이크스러움이 무엇인지 바로 알수 있다는...
반갑게도 올해 무려 신보 (7집)가 나온다는 소식.
