"소피스티 락"이란 장르가 있다. 이 장르가 성행하던 80년대에도 그랬지만, 지금도 생소한 장르로, 크게 보면 뉴웨이브의 서브장르이고, 그러나 같은 신스팝계열인 뉴 로맨틱스보다는 재즈라든가 소프트락적인 느낌이 강해서, 더 성인취향이고 고급스러운 라운지 음악에 가까워 보인다.
예전에 시카고출신의 지금도 활동을 하고 있는 90년대-2000년대의 소피스티 락 계열의 '알루미늄 그룹'을 소개한 바 있는데, 이번에는 이 장르가 생겨나던 시절인 80년대초중반, 그것도 오리지널 국가인 영국출신의 '매트 비안코'의 히트곡을 소개한다. (하긴 자주 소개하는 스윙아웃시스터가 이 계열의 대표격).
매트 비안코란 이름은 마치 솔로처럼 들리지만, 이들은 3인조 밴드다. 80년대중반 아래와 같은 멜랑콜리하면서도 리듬감있는 곡들로 (특히 보사노바를 활용한 작품들이 유명) 유럽전체에서 인기를 끌었으며, 빌보드 댄스차트에도 드는 최대히트곡은 88년에 나온 "Don't blame it on that girl".
뮤비를 보면 외모에서 80년대초반 뉴웨이브계열의 느낌을 강하게 느낄수 있다.
